We all want to be happy and satisfied at work and get some recognition. Yet, work is often a struggle.
What can we do to be happier at work?
How to work in a dynamic environment?
What are the different supervisory skills you can use to be happier at work?
Out of the night that covers me
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance,
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
This meaningful poem entitled “Invictus” is a short poem by the Victorian era British poet William Ernest Henley (1849–1903). The poem is most known for its themes of willpower and strength in the face of adversity, much of which is drawn from the horrible fate assigned to many amputees of the day—gangrene and death and I find this really inspirational in relation with the topic today.
Listen to this episode while we also I discuss this interesting book entitled Ich arbeite in einem Irrenhaus or I work in a mad house (in English) which can help us be happier at work.
- From feelings to understanding: Verbalize your feelings. What is stupid or bad about your company? Go into the details and don’t stop with generic statements.
- From negative to positive: Don’t focus only on the negative things. What are all the great things? Colleagues, environment, perks, interesting projects. What would you love to do more? Does your supervisor know about it?
- Determine the trade-offs and decide: What’s on the positive side and what’s on the negative side. What are the weights? How bad or positive is it? Is the grass on the other site really more green? Consciously make a decision to stay, improve, change or leave.
